Kudalai Idli (Moong Urad dal Idli/Moong Urad dal steamed cake)

kudalai-idli

Kudalai Idli (Moong Urad dal Idli) is a tasty and a nutritious Breakfast/Dinner recipe. This healthy steamed cake is prepared with Yellow Moong dal, Urad dal, Black pepper, Cumin, Green Chillies, Ginger, Channa dal, Curry leaves, Coriander leaves, Cashewnuts, Coconut pieces and Ghee.

This toothsome dish is protein rich as it is prepared with dieter friendly Moong dal and Urad dal. Moong dal is the healthiest among the dal and it is a rich source of Iron, protein, zinc, potassium and Vitamin B. As it is very low in calories and fat, it is dieter friendly too. It is a light food which can be easily digestible. It is rich in fiber which helps in decreasing the high LDL cholesterol. Urad dal is enriched with proteins, Vitamin B, folic acid, Iron and Calcium.

The combination of Moong dal and Urad dal in this delicious Idli makes it as a protein enriched food. It is a very healthy alternative to a normal Rice Idli. This delicious dish is a boon especially to vegetarians as it is a good source of Protein. This is my great Grandmother’s recipe and I prefer to cook Kudalai Idli (Moong Urad dal Idli) often as it is a good alternative to normal rice Idli. Enjoy this dish with the Kumbakonam Kadappa/Easy Tiffin Sambar (In pressure cooker).

Ingredients

1 spoon = 10 ml

1 tsp = 5 ml

1 coffee spoon = 2.5 ml

  • Moong dal – 1 cup (1 cup= 300 ml)
  • Urad dal – 1 cup (1 cup = 300 ml)
  • Black pepper – 1 ¼ tsp
  • Cumin – 1 ¼ tsp
  • Green Chillies – 6 (finely chopped)
  • Ginger – an inch (finely chopped)
  • Channa dal – 1 ¼ tbsp
  • Curry leaves – few (chopped)
  • Coriander leaves – few (chopped)
  • Cashewnuts – 10 (finely chopped)
  • Coconut pieces – few (finely chopped)
  • Ghee – 2 tsp and very little for greasing

Method

  1. Soak the Moong dal and Urad dal separately for 2-3 hours in enough Water. If there is any excess Water remaining (after 2-3 hours) in the soaked Moong dal and Urad dal, drain it.
  2. Grind the soaked Moong dal with Water to a smooth batter (The consistency of the batter should be like Idli batter)

(The Water that requires for grinding depends on the quality of the Moong dal. I have used slightly more than ¾ cup (1 cup = 300 ml) of Water).

  1. Grind the soaked Urad dal with Water to a smooth batter.

(The water that requires for grinding depends on the quality of the Urad dal. I have used (50- 75) ml of Water to grind).

  1. Mix the Moong dal batter and ground Urad dal. Add required salt to it. Ferment it for 8-9 hours at room temperature.
  2. Soak the Chana dal in little water for 10 minutes before preparing Idli.
  3. Roast the Black pepper, Cumin seeds, Soaked Chana dal, chopped Ginger, Curry leaves, Chopped Green Chillies and Heeng powder with the Ghee (1 ½ tsp) for 2-3 minutes in a pan at medium flame. Switch off the flame. Add the contents to the fermented batter and mix it well.
  4. Roast the finely chopped Cashewnuts with the Ghee (½ tsp) until it turns slightly golden brown in a pan at medium flame. Switch off the flame. Add the roasted Cashewnuts to the fermented batter and mix it well.
  5. Add the finely chopped Coconut pieces and chopped coriander leaves to the fermented batter and mix it well.
  6. Grease the molds of the Idli plate with the Ghee (very little).
  7. Pour the fermented batter in the molds of the Idli plate and steam cook it until the Idlis are cooked completely. Hot Kudalai Idli (Moong Urad dal Idli) is ready to serve. • Hi !! you are welcome !!
It’s my pleasure !! I used to grind it mixie.. Moreover, the grinding time for rice and moong dal is different. Moong dal will grind very easily compared to rice. So, I have asked to grind it separately to get a even consistency.
