This is a simple biryani which is prepared by one pot one shot (opos) method. This mouthwatering recipe is prepared in pressure cooker easily. Here, at first, tomatoes along with other few ingredients are ground to a smooth puree. Then, the ground masala is cooked with other spices and soaked rice for few minutes in pressure cooker. Tomato biryani recipe
Cooking time: less than 13 minutes
Serves: 3-4
Ingredients
1 cup = 300 ml
1 tbsp = 15 ml
1 tsp = 5 ml
For grinding
- Tomato / टमाटर / தக்காளி (medium size) – 3
- Green chillies / हरी मिर्च / பச்சை மிளகாய் (small size) – 3
- Cashewnuts / काजू / முந்திரி பருப்பு – 10
- Coconut powder / नारियल पाउडर / தேங்காய் தூள் (fresh / dry) – 2 tsp
- Poppy seeds (Khus khus) / खस खस / கசகசா – ¼ tsp
- Water / पानी / தண்ணீர் (for grinding) – ¼ cup
For preparing biryani
- Basmati rice / बासमती चावल / பாசுமதி அரிசி – 1 cup (1 cup = 300ml)
- Cooking oil / खाना पकाने का तेल / சமையல் எண்ணெய் – 2 tbsp
- Ghee / घी / நெய் – 1 tsp
- Cloves / लौंग / கிராம்பு- 7
- Bay leaves / तेज पत्ता / பிரியாணி இலை – 2
- Cardamom / इलायची / ஏலக்காய் – 6
- Cinnamon / दालचीनी / இலவங்கப்பட்டை – 3 inch
- Cashew nuts / काजू / முந்திரி பருப்பு – 7
- Fennel seeds (saunf) / सौंफ के बीज / பெருஞ்சீரகம் – ¾ tsp
- Cumin seeds / जीरा / சீரகம் – ¾ tsp
- Green chillies / हरी मिर्च / பச்சை மிளகாய் (large) – 1 (slit)
- Ginger garlic paste / अदरक लहसुन पेस्ट / இஞ்சி பூண்டு பேஸ்ட் – 1 ½ tsp
- Onion / प्याज / வெங்காயம் (big) – 2
- Tomato/ टमाटर / தக்காளி (medium) – 2
- Green peas / हरी मटर / பச்சை பட்டாணி – 1/8 cup
- Potato / आलू / உருளைக்கிழங்கு (medium) – 1 (cut in strips)
- Red chilli powder / लाल मिर्च पाउडर / சிவப்பு மிளகாய் தூள் – ½ tsp
- Turmeric powder / हल्दी पाउडर / மஞ்சள் தூள் – 1/3 tsp
- Garam masala powder / गरम मसाला पाउडर / கரம் மசாலா பொடி – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder / धनिया पाउडर / கொத்தமல்லி தூள்– ½ tsp
- Salt / नमक / உப்பு – required
- Water / पानी / தண்ணீர் (for cooking rice) – ¾ cup
- Mint leaves / पुदीने की पत्तियां / புதினா இலைகள் – few
- Coriander leaves / धनिये के पत्ते / கொத்துமல்லி தழை – few
Method
- Soak the basmati rice in water (sufficient) for 25 minutes and drain the water.
- Grind the tomatoes, green chillies, Cashewnuts, poppy seeds (khus khus), coconut powder with water to a smooth puree. Ground puree is ready.
- Add cooking oil and ghee to the cooker (bottom).
- Roast the cloves, bay leaves, cardamom, cinnamon, cashewnuts, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, green chillies and ginger garlic paste until the cashews turn slightly golden.
- Add onions to it and sauté until it turns pink and transparent at medium flame.
- Add tomatoes to it and sauté until soft and juicy at medium flame.
- Add ground puree, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder, salt (required), green peas and potatoes to it.
- Cook until bubbles and froth appears at medium flame (it took 4 minutes).
- Add the soaked basmati rice and water to it. Mix it well.
- Add mint leaves and coriander leaves to it. Close it with a pressure cooker lid.
- Pressure cook for 4 minutes at high flame (with vent weight (whistle)).
- Open the cooker lid when all the pressure subsides down completely. Serve hot. You may like our mumbai mast tomato pulao.
