It is prepared in indian style. It is a healthy and a popular breakfast in both north india and south india.
Here, the prepared instant oats upma mix can be preserved in an airtight container for many days under refrigeration or at normal room temperature. As the ingredients required for the preparation of the oats upma is very less, it can be prepared very easily. People who are in diet can reduce the amount of cooking oil used in this recipe. You may like aloo tikki (using oats) in less than 5 minutes.

Recipe of oats upma

Ingredients
1 tbsp = 15 ml
1 tsp = 5 ml

For instant oats upma mix
- Oats / ओट्स / ஓட்ஸ் – 2 cup (1 cup = 300 ml)
- Sooji / rava / semolina / सूजी / ரவை – 1 cup (1 cup = 300 ml)
- Salt / नमक / உப்பு – required
- Turmeric powder / हल्दी पाउडर / மஞ்சள் தூள் – ¾ tsp
- Dry ginger powder / सूखा अदरक पाउडर / உலர் இஞ்சி பவுடர்– 1/8 tsp
For tempering
- Cooking oil/vegetable oil / खाना पकाने का तेल / சமையல் எண்ணெய் – 3 tbsp
- Mustard seeds / सरसों के बीज / கடுகு – 1 tsp
- Channa dal /चना दाल / கடலை பருப்பு – 2 tsp
- Red chilli flakes / लाल मिर्च फ्लेक्स / சிவப்பு மிளகாய் செதில் – 1 ½ tsp
- Curry leaves/ करी पत्ते / கறிவேப்பிலை – few
- Hing powder/asafoetida / हिंग / பெருங்காயம் – 1/8 tsp
For preparing oats upma with instant mix
- Prepared Instant upma mix – 2 cups ( 1 cup = 300 ml)
- Cooking oil/vegetable oil / खाना पकाने का तेल / சமையல் எண்ணெய் – 3 tbsp + 1 tbsp
- Onions /प्याज / வெங்காயம் (big size) – 1 (chopped) (optional)
- Green peas / हरी मटर / பச்சை பட்டாணி – ¼ cup ( 1 cup = 300 ml) (optional)
- Carrot / गाजर / கேரட் (medium size) – 1
- Salt / नमक / உப்பு – required for vegetables
- Water/ पानी / தண்ணீர் – 2 ½ cups (1 cup = 300 ml)
Method
For instant oats upma mix
- Grind the oats to a coarse powder.
- Add sooji/rava/semolina, salt (required), turmeric powder and dry ginger powder to the oats coarse powder. Mix it well. Oats mixture is ready.
- Crackle the mustard seeds in the cooking oil.
- Add channa dal, red chilli flakes, hing powder and curry leaves to it. Sauté for a minute. Turn off the flame. The tempered mixture is ready.
- Add the tempered mixture to the oats mixture and mix it well. Instant oats upma mix is ready.
Note: Instant oats upma mix can be stored in an airtight container for many days under refrigeration or at room temperature.
For preparing oats upma with instant mix
- Add cooking oil (3 tbsp) to a kadai. Sauté the onions in it until it becomes pink and transparent.
- Add green peas, carrot and salt (required for vegetables) to it. Sauté until the vegetables get cooked well at the medium-high flame.
- Add the instant upma mix and water to it. Mix it well.
- Cook covered (with a lid) for 2-3 minutes at low-medium flame (until it is cooked well).
- Open the lid and mix it well (until the mixture starts leaving the sides of the pan).
- Add cooking oil (1 tbsp) to it and mix it well. Turn off the flame. You may like aloo tikki (using oats) in less than 5 minutes.
Note: The addition of vegetables to the instant oats upma mix is our preference and optional. You can also prepare upma without vegetables.
